Spanish-American war veteran, born on this date in 1868

Even in old cemeteries, encountering the gravestone of a Spanish-American War veteran is a rare occurence--the conflict was so fantastically successful that it didn't last very long. Compared to the Civil War and the two World Wars, not many men served. In a letter to Theodore Roosevelt, John Hay called it "a splendid little war."

But William H. Huscher, who was born on May 18, 1868, was one of those few. He's buried in St. Peter's United Church of Christ Cemetery just a short walk from my home.

Today you are remembered, William.

My great grandfather, Peter Stevenson, also fought in the Spanish American war. He was originally from Ireland but became a New Yorker. I have a picture of him in his uniform, here:

Peter's father came from Ireland, fought in the Civil War and then went back to Ireland, I have a picture of his grave at the link above too.
