Chicago loses population for fourth straight year, suburbs lagging too

Driven by declines on the South Side, the city of Chicago again lost population last year—the fourth dip in a row.

According to estimates released today by the U.S. Census Bureau, the city was home to 2,705,994 residents as of July 1, 2018, down by about 7,000 from the year before.

The drop is about the same as in each of the prior three years. For what it’s worth, the slowdown appears to be hitting all of the nation’s largest cities, with New York City and Los Angeles also showing 12-month estimated declines and Houston's growth slowing to a crawl.

The drop had been expected since the Census Bureau last month reported that the metropolitan area as a whole lost population last year, and indeed the new data released today for municipalities indicates that just about every community in the Chicago area is stuck in neutral.
