On this day in 1918 Lithuania declared its independence. A forgotten victim of the
partition of Poland, the Lithuanian people suffered terrible during the twelve decades Russian rule. Sadly, worse was to come when the Soviet Union annexed Lithuania in 1940, which led to a far-worse occupation that finally ended in the autumn of 1991, three months before the collapse of the Soviet Union. As with the other two Baltic States, Latvia and Estonia, these were the only former USSR republics who left and never look back. God bless them all!
The Lithuanians are a hard-working and freedom loving people.
Happy Independence Day!
