The new year is off to a relatively peaceful start. Bitter cold weather probably had a lot to do with it, but just one person was murdered and only eight others were wounded in Chicago in the first full weekend of 2017.
But when you dig into the shootings and where they occurred, there is reason to worry, as most of them took place in normally quiet, relatively speaking, parts of Chiraq. The murder happened in the University Village neighborhood on the West Side. There were two Western Avenue shootings--one in Lincoln Square on the North Side and in Beverly on the Southwest Side. A man was shot in both hands in a Hyde Park drive-by, about a mile from President Obama's mansion in Kenwood. The soon to be ex-president will stay in Washington when his term expires next week. And on the Northwest Side, in Portage Park, a man was shot during an argument.
The four other shootings took place some of the usual hotbeds of violence. There were two North Lawndale shootings and two in Back of the Yards.
But the temperatures are climbing today.
