(Photos) 1850s pioneer home in Des Plaines, Illinois

The brick house pictured here is owned by the local branch of the Izaak Walton League, a conservation group. The home was built by the Jefferson family in the 1850s by the Jefferson family. The dwelling, which I photographed on Thursday, is on River Road in Des Plaines south of Oakton. Even in winter, when you drive past it's difficult to notice.

The home is now owned by the Forest Preserve District of Cook County.

I believe the lumber for Milwaukee avenue was cut and sold by Socrates Rand and Luther Jefferson - together. Socrates Rand's mill was originally a saw mill and located on the corner of NW Hwy/Dempster and River Rd where the present day "Landmark condominiums" are located. It was located behind the Dr. Earle home. Socrates Rand Purchased the mill from the railroad and later turned it into a grist mill. Jefferson's mill was always a grist mill and not a saw mill. This information is from the original family's ancestors (Baranski) records, photos and memories.
