Rubbing Lincoln's nose for good luck

Near the stairway at Starved Rock State Park near Utica, Illinois is a 100 year-old plaque honoring the northern soldiers of the Civil War.

It reads, "Presented by the Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic, Department of Illinois, 1861-5--1914, Ida E. Wright, president."

Continuing, "Commemorating the deeds of the Union veterans of the Civil War."

It ends with a passage from the 16th president's second inaugural address, "With malice towards none, with charity for all."

As you can see by the lack of tarnishment on Lincoln's face, passerbys regularly rub Old Abe's nose for good luck.
