One of the first wildflowers to emerge on forest beds is the spring beauty, scientific name Claytonia virginica.
It's survives the winter through its bulbous corm, the spring beauty's roots are edible and they were a food source for Native Americans.
This flower was photographed last month in Morton Grove's Linne Woods.
