Old town Riga, Latvia |
This case involves a Jesse James of the keyboard.
From TechWeek Europe:
Latvia has refused to extradite the man accused by the US authorities of creating the infamous Gozi Trojan, saying the punishment he is facing is too severe. The virus infected over one million computers--which allowed the trio to plunder bank accounts.
Deniss "Miami" Calovskis and his two accomplices allegedly wrote the virus that enabled cyber criminals to steal millions through an organisation described by one US attorney as a "modern-day bank robbery ring."
He is now facing over 60 years in a US jail, a term which Latvia’s Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics has called "disproportionate."
Vladimir Putin ignores the Obama administration's request for Snowden.
Latvia says "No."
Is this what Obama calls "leading from behind?"
As for Latvia, it needs to calm down over this case. Calovskis hasn't even been tried yet, let alone sentenced.
UPDATE August 6: Earlier today the Latvian government approved the extradition of Calovskis.
UPDATE August 11: Hold on there, the extradition is back on hold.
