Much lower on the state's food chain was former Dixon comptroller, Rita Crundwell. The championship horse breeder embezzled $54 million from the small Lee County city best known as Ronald Reagan's hometown. The filched cash was used to support her expensive second career and an accompanying luxury lifestyle.
Since pleading guilty in a Rockford federal court, Crundwell has been marking time in the Boone County Jail. But tonight I can exclusively report that the horse lady is now an inmate at Chicago's Metropolitan Correctional Center--the onetime home of Barack Obama crony, political fixer Tony Rezko. As this facility is usually utilized to incarcerate prisoners needed to testify in trials or for those serving night or weekend sentences, this probably won't be a permanent residence for Crundwell.
Last week, state charges were dropped against Crundwell. She is 60, and her anticipated release date is March 5, 2030. Why waste money on another trial is the thinking, I guess. On the other hand, if there was ever an archetype non-violent crime for locking-someone-up-and-throwing-away-the-key situation, this is it.
Dixon, which is in the north-central part of Illinois, is a wonderful place--I urge you to visit it.
Oh, spend some money there, too.
