Pope Benedict XVI made the
shocking announcement that he will be resigning at the end of this month. Yes, he's 85, but no pontiff has quit the papacy since 1415. But that was a time when a second man claimed to be pope, during the era of the
Western Schism.
"Strength of mind and body are necessary, strength which in the last few months has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognize my incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted to me," Benedict said in a statement.
