While hiking on the eastern edge of Yosemite National Park three years ago I was able to get close enough to a white-crowned sparrow for me to snap a decent photograph of the bird.
Some of these sparrows live year-round in the west, but others migrate in the winter to an area that covers roughly the bottom two-thirds of the United States. Breeding range for the travelers is mostly in Canada and Alaska.
