Have you noticed a lot of black insects with red or orange markings lately? They are boxelder bugs. When the cooler temperatures of autumn arrive, these insects emerge from boxelder trees and seek shelter in buildings. They are a major nuisance although they don't bite. However, if attacked, like skunks they emit a noxious odor.
These two bugs--appropriately they are resting on boxelder leaves--were photographed yesterday afternoon in Highland Park, Illinois.
