Wrong way: Chicago Teachers Union members authorize strike

Occupy Chicago rally, May 18
The Chicago Sun-Times is reporting that the Chicago Teachers Union is expected to announce tomorrow morning that its members have authorized a strike. The union wants a 30 percent raise, Chicago has no money and Mayor Rahm Emanuel is receptive to expanding the city's fledgling charter schools.

As for the CTU, clearly it is not aware that post-Wisconsin recall election, the era of the public-sector union is over.

An authorization vote doesn't mean a strike is inevitable--but the emboldened, yet out-of-touch, Occupy supporting union appears to be marching against history--and to a defeat.

Chicago residence who are teachers, police, firefighters and more deserve better. They have all worked hard. The city threw its money away to frivolous spending and bank losses which hard working folks are now suffering the consequences. The teachers are fighting for their livelihood. And how dare you address Wisconsin's gov Walker who spent million in an antiworkers campaign. You suck

I think for a 30% raise is a bit much in this economy. I don't think they'll get much public support, especially when most people feel lucky just to have a job. Rahm should so a Ronny Raygun and fire them all if they strike. There are thousands of unemployed teachers who would step in and fool their shows in a moments notice

Chicago teacher union president is being piggish. If we weren't forced to pay dues, most of us would quit the union. We need a walker here in Illinois!

Your commentators obviously do not understand that our education system is under attack from multinational forces who agree that our standard of living is still too high and that we already produce more innovative (rational-thinking) technically proficient graduates than the world needs (especially at the salary levels they have been used to receiving). Leaders here and abroad prefer rote learning or bubble-test training to rational critical thinking because anyone capable of the latter would oppose further consolidation of power in the hands of the corporations that can seen to be responsible for the recent decline in our wealth and freedom. So, they need to get rid of dedicated and experienced teachers and replace them with computer-based courses and testing technicians. Parents against testing will be huge movement by this fall and there will be strikes.
