While there should not be an automatic political litmus test for actors playing a role of a political figure--this casting is wrong. Fonda's liberalism--such as her trip to Hanoi during the Vietnam War--goes way past "loyal opposition."
Smart actors and actresses wake up confronting this cruel fact every day: For every part they are offered--there are plenty of other performers waiting who can take their place. Whether it is for The Butler, a training film for insurance claims adjusters, the local Renaissance fair, or for a Depends commercial--there will always...always be others waiting to pounce on these roles.
As Dustin Hoffman phrased it so well about acting in Tootsie, "There is no work. But you gotta find ways to work."
So only Jane Fonda can portray Nancy Reagan?
C'mon, now.
