Mitt Romney is cruising to a big win in the Illinois Primary. Right now the former Massachusetts governor has a double digit lead, 47 percent to 35 percent, over Rick Santorum. Ron Paul, who is very popular in Chicago's north suburbs, where I live, is in a distant third. Newt Gingrich is in last among the candidates still in the race.
I imagine Romney's lead will narrow as the generally-slow-to-report rural counties weigh in. And they'll be slower tonight because in some of those counties ballots have to be remade by hand. Re-voted, that is--under the watchful eye of election judges because the paper size didn't fit the optical scanners that are supposed to read them. Illinois continues to screw up.
When will that end? Probably never.
There are two elections for president in Illinois. A beauty contest is the first--but then in the next section of the ballot, voters choose delegates--there are three per candidate in each of our 18 congressional districts. However, in four districts, Santorum didn't have any delegates on the ballot.
This will be a big night for Romney.
