Late last year Sears Holdings demanded a tax break from Illinois under the threat of moving its headquarters to another state. The onetime retail behemoth has been based in the Chicago area since 1886.
I favor lower taxes--for everyone and every business. Last year, with no Republican support, Illinois raised its personal income tax by 67 percent and its corporate income tax by 46 percent.
Sears, along with the CME Group, got their tax break from Governor Pat Quinn and the General Assembly. Today it announced it's laying off 100 workers at its Hoffman Estates headquarters.
Illinois is run by chumps. As for Sears, it should concentrate on improving its store sites and selling quality merchandise at a low price--rather than swindling Springfield politicians.
