Newt's route to the top

.
November, at least where I live, can be a depressing month. It's cold, dark, and rainy. It's the same deal in Iowa--more on the Hawkeye State later.

But since the leaves began falling, Newt Gingrich has been rising in the polls. The latest Fox News national poll has the former House Speaker leading Mitt Romney by one percentage point--which of course is within the poll's margin of error. But Gingrich's support has doubled in the last month. While two days ago, a McClatchy-Marist poll shows Gingrich best-positioned to topple the Obama regime next November, although the president leads by two percentage points--but that's within that poll's margin of error.

William Jacobson of Legal Insurrection is backing Newt. There has been a bit of a controversy over Gingrich receiving consulting fees from troubled lender Freddie Mac, but Matt Lewis of the Daily Caller doesn't think it's a big deal. Neither do I.

Oh yeah, Iowa. I almost forgot. A Rasmussen Reports poll of likely Iowa Caucuses voters released today has Newt with a commanding lead--32 percent for Gingrich, 19 percent for Romney, and 13 percent for Herman Cain.

It's not over till next November, but perhaps the 11th month is the lucky one for Newt.
