Jim Ryan channeling grief to help others

Illinois does produce honorable politicians. One of them is former state Attorney General Jim Ryan. The DuPage County Republican lost his 12 year-old daughter Annie to cancer in 1997. Four years ago his son Patrick committed suicide at the age of 24.

Although still grieving, Ryan and his wife Marie are helping others. The Annie Ryan Run--which I participated in once--has raised $500,000 for the Midwest Children's Brain Tumor Center at Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge.

Later this month the inaugural Patrick J. Ryan Golf Outing will raise money for a new Catholic Charities program for children who have lost family members to suicide.
