The western Nebraska town of North Platte was home to the North Platte Canteen during World War II. Union Pacific trains transporting troops across the country would stop there for 10 or 15 minutes and volunteers would serve refreshments to the soldiers.
That spirit survives in North Platte, the town's local paper reports that customers of Prairie Hand Knits have been knitting wool caps for our Marines fighting in Afghanistan.
Warm deeds for a cold field of battle.
