Saving money: Kansas konsolidation

Chase County Courthouse
In an attempt to solve its massive budget shortfall, Illinois raised its personal income tax rate by 67 percent. And it is still increasing spending.

Kansas' new governor, San Brownback, is utilizing a different approach--consolidation. The Wichita Eagle reports that the Republican signed an executive order shifting the state Division of Travel and Tourism to the Department of Wildlife and Parks.

Last week Brownback, a former US Senator, signed an executive order abolishing the state's parole board. It's responsibilities are now handled by the Kansas Department of Corrections.

That's the way to do it, Illinois.

Brownback chose the beautiful Chase County Courthouse in Cottonwood Falls, which I visited four years ago, to sign the tourism order.

Now they're trying to figure out what to do about that capital bill that got struck down in the courts.
