Adding in a small way to Chicago's pension woes is retired police commander Jon Burge. Last week he was sentenced to 4 1/2 years in prison for lying about torturing suspects. Burge denies he tortured anyone, but he's accused of attaching electrodes to the exposed genitals of suspects. The statue of limitations had expired on the brutality charges, which is why he was only found guilty of lying.
But the brute will still be collecting his $36,000 a year pension because it "had nothing to do with things he did when he was on the job," said Kenneth Hauser president of the police pension board. Burge had been retired for ten years he was convicted.
The vote was split 4-4, a majority was needed to deny Burge his pension.
Chicago. What a city.
