Early this morning two Chicago firefighters died in a fire on Chicago's South Side. A truss roof collapsed as firefighters were searching for survivors in an abandoned building that used to house a dry cleaners--sometimes homeless people move into vacant structures.
Killed were Edward Stringer, 47, who was divorced with two adult children, and Corey Ankum, 34, who was married with two children. Ankum's wife is Mayor Richard Daley's personal secretary.
It was on this day 100 years ago at Chicago's Union Stockyards when 21 firemen perished. It was the deadliest firefighter tragedy until the 9/11 attacks in New York. Some firefighters were called from that memorial service to respond to the South Side blaze.
