Although the Chicago Tribune's John Kass calls the mayoral race Rahm Emanuel's to lose, he asks the Ramhfather some tough questions regarding his lucrative 14-month tenure with Freddie Mac, one of the villains of the 2008 financial crash. And he queries Emanuel about the mysterious patronage army led by former Department of Water boss Donald Tomczak that brought him victory in the tight 2002 Democratic primary in Illinois' 5th Congressional Disrict. Tomczak later went to prison for his role in the Hired Truck Scandal.
Rahm doesn't directly answer either question. But Kass notes that the White House refuses to release Freddie Mac meeting minutes from Emanuel's stint there.
There are eight other likely candidates for mayor. For the uninitiated, Chicago's mayoral elections are non-partisan--just like the aldermanic races. If no candidate wins a majority in the first round--which will be held in February--the top two finishers face off in April.
