Chicago's mayoral race has a couple of late entrants. The man Rod Blagojevich appointed to the US Senate, Roland Burris, is the beneficiary of a "Draft Burris" movement. Petitions with nearly 20,000 signatures were filed for the outgoing senator were filed today. Burris' state director was at the filing as an observer. The Chicago Tribune's Clout Street blog reports that the South Sider "is aware of the effort and didn't want to stop it."
Filing even more petitions was Rob Halpin, the man renting Rahm Emanuel's North Side home. Emanuel, the apparent frontrunner in the race, asked Halpin to move out--and he did the unthinkable--he said, "No."
Several South Side Republicans--yes, they do exist--approached Halpin about running for mayor. He did the unthinkable--he said, "Yes."
If they do end up on the February ballot, will Burris and Halpin--combined--get more than 20,000 votes?
I predict they won't.
