Mob Banker's campaign plans attack on Kirk's military record, and a look at the man behind it

I've been telling anyone who will listen that Republican Mark Kirk will defeat Alexi Giannoulias, the failed Mob Banker, by five percentage points in the Illinois US Senate race. Almost every opinion poll shows Kirk with a slight lead, albeit within the margin of error. Illinois still being a Democratic state--although not as much so as in 2006--many of the undecideds will vote Republican on November 2. Undecideds late in an election season usually go with challengers--and the GOP is the out-of-power party here.

So taking a play from Jack Conway's Kentucky playbook, the Mob Banker, who has never served in our military and may in fact be a draft dodger from the Greek armed forces, is planning a desperate flanking maneuver, as the Weekly Standard told us yesterday:
Just in case you didn’t think the Illinois Senate race could sink any lower, THE WEEKLY STANDARD has learned that Democrat Alexi Giannoulias is planning to launch a final ad campaign featuring a “veteran” to attack Mark Kirk’s service record.

The timing of this is altogether ironic, since Senator John Kerry, the former Democratic presidential nominee, is campaigning with Giannoulias today in Illinois. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, together they will go after "the same people who bankrolled the 'Swiftboat' attacks against [Kerry] when he was running for president in 2004."

On Friday, however, a known anti-Kirk political activist with ties to the Giannoulias campaign posted a message on his Facebook account searching for "an Iraq War veteran who wants to be in a TV commercial slamming Mark Kirk." Take a look:

Asked whether the veteran would be compensated for the appearance, Carl Nyberg responds: "…if the veteran is traveling from outside the Chicago area, I'm sure the producers would be willing to cover travel expenses."
Lovely.

Kirk got caught embellishing his Navy credentials, which is a real shame--his military career is strong enough to run on.

Nyberg is a Navy veteran too. And a blogger. For years he ran a snit of a blog called Proviso Probe. His efforts got him the attention of one of his targets, as the Chicago Tribune's Eric Zorn told us in 2005.

Zorn excerpted the court document:

Throughout NYBERG'S postings on his web blog, NYBERG repeatedly attacks plaintiff's character and integrity, calling him a "liar" and insinuating he associates with corrupt individuals.... Defendant NYBERG further insinuates that [plaintiff] is comfortable with illegal activity... that he is an unethical attorney ...and that he engages in nepotism...
Proviso Probe has the unredacted version.

Again, returning to his old blog, Nyberg posted this entry on July 16, 2008: Judge grants temporary restraining order against Proviso Probe.

Democrats: This is your party.

I emailed Nyberg last night, he didn't respond to my request inquiring about the current status of the lawsuit.

Oh...Does anyone know what Nyberg's role in the Giannoulias campaign is?

UPDATE 10:10pm: About an hour ago I got an e-mail "bounce-back" from Nyberg's apparently discontinued account, which I got from another blog of his.
