MI 1: Benishek news, shovel ready truth, and a misleading ad

Time to return to Michigan's 1st Congressional District. I saw a lot of those Obama stimulus "campaign signs" when I visited the Upper Peninsula last summer--yet Michigan suffers from a 13.1 percent unemployment rate. Actually, I saw those signs, but not much work was going on.

Dr. Dan Benishek, the Republican candidate in "Yooper Land" and the northern Lower Peninsula, comments on President Obama's recent remarks that there is no such thing as a "shovel-ready" project.

"The unread stimulus bill of 2009," Benishek says, "is why I entered the race for Congress in the first place."

The Democrats are running scared in northern Michigan--they've produced a misleading ad about Benishek's musings on the Fair Tax, a national sales tax. A Fair Tax would replace the income tax, not add to it.

From the good doctor's web site, here is his position on taxes:

I believe strongly we need a simpler tax system and lower taxes. When asked about our existing tax structure, I note that we have an extremely complicated and unfair system, thanks to the gerry-rigging by Washington politicians. I would be open to studying all sorts of tax simplification and tax reform proposals and, in that regard, I will look with an open mind at any simpler and lesser tax approach in Congress. Once we simplify the tax code, we should leave it alone. All the wrangling for loopholes and exceptions in Washington are a source of corruption.
This is the second deceptive ad on this issue. Last month the attorney for the Benishek campaign asked television stations to pull that ad, stating:

The DCCC tried to make the exact same spurious accusation against House candidate Tim Burns in Pittsburgh last May, its ad was swiftly pulled off the air by a prominent Pittsburgh station.
