Virginia Democrat proposes stopping Obama surface mining rules

Yesterday a big pro-coal rally took place in Washington. Coinciding with that event was an announcement that Rep. Rick Boucher (D-VA) introduced a bill to prevent changes in surface mining rules that the Obama administration backs.

Speaking of his southwestern Virginia constituents. Boucher had this to say:

The coal industry creates some of the highest-paying jobs in the local economy, and the products and services purchased in the course of mining operations create thousands of additional jobs in support industries," Boucher said. "For these reasons, it is critical that any regulation on coal mining operations balances environmental concerns with the economic benefits the coal industry provides."
Boucher could be running scared--National Review's Jim Geraghty says the GOP has a "good chance" of ending Boucher's congressional career.
