Stupak district: Republican concedes 15 vote defeat in primary

After Rep. Bart Stupak (D-MI) flip-flopped on ObamaCare in exchange for an easily revocable executive order banning federal funding on abortion, he opted not to run for reelection, which put the sprawling northern Michigan district in play. Most experts view the race as a toss up this fall.

Democratic State Representative Gary McDowell ran unopposed in the August 3 primary, but it was a very tight race in the Republican primary. On the day after the election, physician Dan Benishek led state Senator Jason Allen by one vote. Benishek later expanded that to 15 votes, and it appears that will be the final tally. Allen announced last night that he would not contest the results--there will be no recount.

Michigan's 1st comprises the entire Upper Peninsula and the upper third of its lower one. Both candidates are "Yoopers."

Good luck to Benishek in November, he's the prescription Michiganders need in Washington. As for Allen, he's a class act. It's painful to lose, especially by so little. The district covers 31 counties...one vote from each, wait not even that!...and well, you know. But Allen is doing what's best for the GOP. A recount battle would have gift-wrapped the seat to the Dems.

Benishek is popular with the Tea Party movement, but he'll be facing Lonny Lee Snyder along with McDowell. He's part of that phony-Democratic creation called the Tea Party designed to siphon votes from the Republicans in competitive Michigan districts. There are similar fake Tea Parties in other states.
