Specter's downward spiral

Sen. Arlen Specter (D-PA) is having a rough May. In a cynical attempt to keep his Senate seat, Specter switched parties, but he may not even be on the fall general election ballot, the latest polls show that Rep. Joe Sestak could retire Specter in next week's Democratic Primary.

But that hasn't stopped the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee from paying for some Specter television ads. As for that fact, the irony is rich: Dems spending money to prop up a candidate who was a Republican for four decades, in order to defeat a longtime Democrat.

Meanwhile, yesterday evening Specter thanked the Allegheny County Democratic Party for their support. But twice he referred to them as the Allegheny County Republican Party.

That's not the first time he made such a gaffe.

Incumbents are on the menu this year. Longtime West Virginia Congressman Alan Mollohan was whacked in yesterday's Democratic Primary there.

Certainly Sestak has been climbing in the polls as the reality of having Specter as the Dem candidate in the general election hits home for many democrats.

Look at it this way, Specter is to Pa Dems what McCain was to Republicans in the 2008 election cycle. Bad news.
