Mayor Daley wants up-or-down vote on South Side Wal-Mart

While celebrating his 68th birthday, Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley renewed his call for a second Chicago Wal-Mart to open. Ald. Anthony Beale (9th) has been trying to bring the retail giant--as well as hundreds of jobs--to the historic Pullman neighborhood. Daley wants an up-and-down vote on proposed South Side store.

The unemployment rate in the Chicago metropolitan area is 11.3 percent.

Many of Chicago's aldermen, more interested in placating their union pals, oppose Wal-Mart. Daley has some words for them:

Vote it up or down, and then go back and tell the people 'Hey, I got a job as alderman, but you don't have one, ha ha ha,'
Currently the Wal-Mart expansion proposal is bottled up in the City Council Zoning Committee.

Much of the South Side is classified as a food desert, an area without a supermarket offering low-price groceries.
