Illinois Democratic politicians for the most part are very eager for the Gitmo North prison to open in Thomson. However, Wal-Mart, the world's largest retailer, has been trying to open a store on Chicago's South Side for two years, and with some exceptions, notably Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley, the Democrats don't want the big box behemoth there.
Daley phrases it this way: "It's time to open all doors, all discussions about Wal-Mart stores in Chicago. Chicago needs good paying jobs."
That's for sure. The Olympics won't be coming to Chicago, and several hundred jobs are just what the South Side needs. It would be a "dream come true," to use a borrow a phrase from Gitmo North backer Dick Durbin.
Illinois has an 11 percent unemployment rate, it's certainly higher on the South Side. Build the South Side Wal-Mart.
But don't stop there.
Unfortunately, most Democratic politicians, including members of Chicago's City Council, are more interested in pandering to unions rather than helping their constituents.

It seems easy to play politics with business and jobs than it is to allow them to engage in their activities unfettered.
