So your brother's bound and gagged
And they've chained him to a chair
Won't you please come to Chicago just to sing
Graham Nash, "Chicago," 1971.
This summer's Rod Blagojevich trial promises to the most unhinged Chicago trial since the Chicago Seven circus four decades ago. A day after the legal team of disgraced former Governor Rod Blagojevich filed a motion to subpoena President Obama to testify at the hair-brained one's corruption trial, Sen. Dick Durbin's office revealed that the Springfield Democrat received a similar subpoena last week.
Durbin's office said the Senate's second-ranking Democrat would "cooperate with the court in any reasonable way." He says he only spoke with Blago once about the naming a successor to Obama, and he suggested that the governor simply pick a good candidate. But instead, Blagojevich selected a hack, Roland Burris.
Early in the Chicago Seven trial an eighth defendant, Black Panther Bobby Seale, was bound and gagged after an outburst. It's unlikely that history will repeat itself, but with Blago, anything is possible.
For now, Blagojevich just seems content with dragging the Democratic Party down with him.
