The Who: Super Bowl performance, part one

Odds are pretty good, if you are reading this in the United States, that you saw The Who perform during the Super Bowl on Sunday.

But if you missed it, or if you want to see it again, is the first half of their performance.

I liked the medley approach The Who chose-- Bruce Springsteen played just three songs last year. But I was disappointed they didn't dig deeper in their catalog--which was a hope I had expressed in this space last month. With the exception of "Who Are You," all of the songs they played were from 1969-1971.

There was criticism of the NFL for booking The Who for what is considered a family event. In 2003 lead guitarist Pete Townshend was arrested for downloading child pornography on his computer. His claim was that he was researching child abuse--and Townshend says he was abused as a child. That excuse doesn't work in Great Britain or here--and Townshend was registered as a UK sex offender until two years ago.

Before and since the arrest, Townshend did a great deal of charitable work for children...but that still doesn't make what he did alright.

But Townshend seems genuinely remorseful about the episode, and says we won't repeat the crime.
