For over sixty years, the my alma mater, the University of Illinois, and Northwestern University fought on the football field for the honor of taking home the Sweet Sioux Tomahawk.
The name of the trophy upset a few dozen people, so the NCAA, in line with its drive to eliminate all Native American imagery in college athletics, forced the schools to dump the trophy.
I was against the move--tradition, you know, but the schools have come up with a great replacement--a bronze stovepipe hat dubbed the Land of Lincoln Trophy.
It's an appropriate honor for Abraham Lincoln, as the nation continues to celebrate the bicentennial of his birth.
One more thing: Go Illini!
