Upper Peninsula Upventure: Whitefish Point Light

One of the first lighthouses constructed on the shores of Lake Superior--and the oldest still active--is Whitefish Point Light near Paradise, Michigan.

It was first lit in 1849.

The lighthouse acts as a sentinel over Whitefish Bay--a graveyard of ships. Adjacent to the lighthouse is the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum, which holds numerous artifacts, including the bell from the SS Edmund Fitzgerald, which sank in the bay in 1975.

Unfortunately, the museum was closed for the day when I arrived.

I took the photograph of the lighthouse--which is being rehabbed--from the top of a nearby sand dune. In the background is the lake, farther back is Canada.
