Last week a mistrial was declared in the federal civil rights trial of Jackson, Mississippi Mayor Frank Melton and his former police bodyguard, Michael Recio. The jury was unable to agree on a verdict.
The men were acquitted in a criminal trial last year.
The latest charges stem from a 2006 warrantless raid on a duplex carried out by a mob of police officers and teenagers--armed with sledgehammers. Melton claimed the home was a drug house.
The following year Reason Magazine named the onetime television commentator "The Worst Mayor in America."
According to the Jackson Clarion-Ledger, Melton and Recio's new trial will begin May 11, which is six days after rhe Mississippi capital's Democratic mayoral primary. On Wednesday Melton officially announced his reelection run.
