Cash from that bill has been directed to the COPS Grant program. But Mike Mullins, the police chief of Natchez, Mississippi, might say "No, thank you" to those funds.
The grant pays the salaries of up to three new officers for three years. The city must retain the officer for at least one year after the grant runs out.
Mullins said the grant does not pay for uniforms, benefits and other costs which run about $6,900 for one officer. When it's time for the city to pay the fourth year of salary, including pay raises, Mullins says the cost is about $33,000.
Mullins says when the city hires two new officers, it needs a new vehicle, which costs about $27,500.
Once the stimulus money is gone, Natchez foots 100 percent of the expenses.
Not such a good deal.
