Genson likely to defend Blago

Big deal Chicago defense attorney Ed Genson will likely defend disgraced Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich. Genson has represented a variety of well-known clients in Chicago courtrooms, most recently rapper R. Kelly. Genson was on the winning side of that trial--the singer was accused of having sex with a 14 year-old. Former Rep. Mel Reynolds (D-IL), Jesse Jackson, Jr.'s predecessor in Congress, faced charges of soliciting sex with a minor, also hired Genson. The state won that one, Reynolds was sent prison.

Genson recently represented Lord Conrad Black, the former chairman of the Hollinger media empire, in his fraud trial. A federal jury found Black guilty.

Whenever there is a high profile trial in Chicago, Genson's name seems to always pop up. In regards to defending Blagojevich, Genson told reporters that he needs "to check some conflicts, but I'm sure I'll be retained."

It is unusual for Genson to represent clients who plan to plead guilty. But the Blagojevich case is quite unusual. Even on Chicago standards.
