Illinois corruption update: Durbin considering asking Bush to commute ex-Gov. Ryan's sentence

Illinois' current governor, Democrat Rod Blagojevich, is under federal investigation and is expected to be indicted. Blago's Republican predecessor, George Ryan, is currently serving time at the Federal Correctional Institute in Terre Haute, Indiana, for racketeering and mail fraud crimes.

There may be some good news coming for Ryan, however. In a Springfield press conference, Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) said that he is considering asking President Bush to commute Ryan's prison term, stating "I'm in the process of reviewing that at this point. That is a decision only the president can make."

This is a completely subjective and perhaps unpopular point of view, but I see little point to keeping the man in prison. I suppose some could find satisfaction in his further suffering, but I've never been much of a fan of inflicting vengeful pain and suffering on the incarcerated. George Ryan poses no threat to the rest of us, he has been severely punished, he has been bankrupted, disgraced and doesn't have many more years on this earth. I hope some mercy is extended to him.

Kankakee should begin its candlelight vigil soon.

Re Dr.X's point of view: Corruption is the root cause of most of our problems in govt, especially in Illinois. The list of corrupt officials in the LoL is too extensive to list, but one comes to mind--Paul Powell.

I say, let Mr. Ryan serve out his sentence to the best of his abilities.

Durbin should meet with the Willis family and ask them whether Ryan's suffered enough.

If they say "yes", then Durbin can petition Bush.

If not - Durbin can get bent, and Ryan can rot.

For those of you not from Illinois, read here from more on the Willis family.

Dr. X...The odds of Ryan committing crimes if he was set free are quite small. Your experience in confronting such issues I'm sure dwarfs mine, but the same could be said for the former mayor of the town west of me, Nicholas Blase, who is 80. Blase just pleaded guilty to extortion charges.

I dunno. But Ryan's Licences for Bribes scandal is one of the few such scandals where people--excuse me, children died.

Ryan is broke. Blase, on the other hand, probably is not.

Pardon Gov. Ryan and Good for Senator Durbin.

Many good people ( Tom Roeser/John Kass e.g.) have strongly supported Ryan's conviction, but so many more hypocrites like the Trib/STNG/Brown/Marin/Zorn and others merely joined the pile on.

A setup so no one can complain when Hussein pardons 'Democrat' Rod Blagojevich, after the guilt POS is convicted. Trubin (traitor)Durbin is playing the Chicago (ruled) mob's game. Wonder which of Turbin's family members they threatened to put beside Hoffa.
