Awaiting the July 4th parade in Evanston

Evanston, Illinois' July 4th parade, which I've never witnessed, must be a big deal. The parade travels through the North Shore suburbs's west side, most of Evanston's glitz is near the lakefront along Sheridan Road.

These photographs were taken by Mrs. Marathon Pundit two days ago--Evanstonians had already marked their claims to the choice viewing spots.

Morton Grove has a parade too, a pretty good one, but the folks won't begin choosing their spots along our parade route until later this morning.

UPDATE 10:30PM: North Shore resident Dr. X explained the chairs in the comments section:

Thousands attend this parade and it goes on for hours. I was there today and I've attended several times.

People used to start putting their chairs out two weeks earlier until the city passed an ordinance limiting curbside real estate claims to 2 days in advance.

Now that is a picture of devotion if I have ever seen one. Must be the best 4th of July Parade ever.

I remember getting our bikes all decked out with Red, White and Blue streamers. Weaving the Streamers through the spokes. And riding in the local parade in Glenview.

I'm shocked that Evanston would even have a 4th of July parade.

And there is nothing so remarkable about the parade except, perhaps, the sheer size of the parade and the size of the enthusiastic crowd, decked out in patriotic regalia. Evanston loves parades.

What a great community tradition! It's wonderful that it's so enthusiastically supported.
