Convicted E. St. Louis vote buyer now an asst. school principal

You can't keep a good man down.

Charlie Powell is the former head of the East St. Louis Democratic Party. In 2004, Powell and several others in this heavily Democratic southwestern Illinois city participated in a vote buying scheme which included cash, booze, and cigarettes as incentives to vote "the correct way" in that year's general election.

Powell is out of prison, but not out of work. He is now the new assistant princicpal--or is it vice principal?-- at a new ESL charter school.

The Belleville News-Democrat has more:

Powell and his lifelong friend, Fonzy Coleman (My note, "Whoah!"), will begin working July 1 at the (Tomorrow's Builders YouthBuild) charter school on State Street.

Coleman, the retired East St. Louis High School principal, will earn $50,000 as principal and Powell will earn $40,000, said Vicky Forby, executive director of Emerson Park Development Corp, which sponsors the YouthBuild school.

Powell will be responsible for all disciplinary issues, community services and physical education activities, Forby said.

Forby denied there was any political pressure on her to hire Powell. She said she approached Powell about working at the school and considered him a "perfect fit."

Hat tip to Cal Skinner of the McHenry County Blog for the story.

Convicted felons working to discipline children? Yeah, "perfect fit", indeed.

Isn't East St Louis a hell hole?

Not that I've heard anything, but if it's heavily Democratic, then I'd just assumed ...

Shouldn't there be a mental health evaluation of all school employee's? If one is put in place, St Louis would have to go out of state to hire a janitor.

Dunno...But it's stories like this that give ammo to groups who oppose charter schools. I may elaborate on this on a future post.
