McCain's foreign policy speech

While Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton are slinging the mud as they continue to battle for the Democratic nomination, John McCain used a speech to the World Affairs Council in Los Angeles this morning to outline his foreign policy positions.

Early on, McCain stated, "I detest war," as he recalled when he was five, his father, John McCain II, being notified of the Pearl Harbor attack. He spoke of the death of his grandfather, Admiral John "Slip" McCain, and his death, essentially of exhaustion, just one day after returning stateside after the end of World War II.

Further reaching out to the center, but not endearing himself to conservatives, McCain explained the dangers of global warming.

One of the criticisms of President Bush's foreign policy is his "go-it-alone" approach. That is an oversimplification: For instance, British, Polish, and Australian troops participated in the invasion of Iraq, and forces from many nations are participating in the battle against extremists in Afghanistan.

Still, McCain pledges to work more with our allies.

A good performance by McCain--Confident, yet relaxed, and very statesman-like.
