Chicago Cubs approach ominous milestone--a century without a championship

Disclosure: I'm a lifetime Chicago White Sox fan.

It is a certainty. The Chicago Cubs will go 100 years without winning a World Series championships. In the 1908 fall classic, the Cubs bested the Detroit Tigers--the date was October 14, 2008. With the expanded playoffs used by Major League Baseball, this year's World Series won't end until shortly before Halloween.

The Cubs play in the woeful National League Central, which (from the Cubs' perspective) is blessed with three small market teams: the Milwaukee Brewers, the Pittsburgh Pirates, and the Cincinnati Reds. So they have a good chance of making the playoffs. From there? Well, it's up to the Cubs.

But the Cubs will go more than a century without a World Series Championship.

The North Siders home opener is tomorrow, they play the Milwaukee Brewers.

I wonder why the Cubs went a century without a World Series titles. I could say bad management but that could only hold after 1945. Before then the Cubs might make an appearance in the World Series, but can't close the deal. I wonder what's up? The Braves better be careful before they turn into the Cubs.

Phil Wrigley. Who was not a good owner, he didn't believe in a farm system, and was slow to sign black players. It's no coincidence that in the 1950s, the two teams that dominated the National League, the New York Giants and the Brooklyn Dodgers, were much quicker in adding black players.

They've been better under the Tribune, but not good enough
