Glenn Reynolds of Instapundit and his wife Dr. Helen Smith are back with another Glenn & Helen Show podcast. Kay S. Hymowitz of the Manhattan Institute has new book out, Marriage and Caste in America: Separate and Unequal Families in a Post-Marital Age.
I listened to the podcast during my drive to Springfield a couple of days ago--I was taking Little Marathon Pundit to see the Abraham Lincoln sites there--and I was pleased to hear that Glenn, Helen, and Kay agree that the presence of an involved father in the development of a child cannot be underestimated. So I guess I'm doing something right with the upbringing of my daughter.
As far as "caste" and "marriage," simply put, according to Hymowitz, kids from single parent homes--which almost always means a no-father household--are more likely to live in poverty. In a two parent home, the kids, as well as the mother, end up in better shape--and not just financially so.
