Government shuts down--and sun will rise in a few hours

Sunrise, Monument Valley
It's midnight Eastern Time. The federal government-the liberal Valhalla--has shut down, sort of. In a few hours, the sun will rise. And right now the rivers are still flowing, the wind is still blowing, the deserts are still sandy, and the glaciers are still frozen.

This is not the big deal the libs are making it out to be.

(Photo) Axehead Lake--another body of water created by the building of the Tri-State Tollway

Just west of Park Ridge, Illinois is Axehead Lake, another of the lakes created in the 1950s by the construction of Interstate 294 the Tri-State Tollway. Fill was needed to build the road. Axehead is a fishing paradise twice a year--in April and October--when the state stocks the man-made lake with rainbow trout.

Axehead Lake is on the corner of River Road and Touhy--and it can be seen by drivers on the Tri-State.

Government shutdown--it's not really going to shutdown

Government shutdown? Mail will continue, social security checks will be cut, and taxes will be collected. National Parks and Washington museums will be closed. So it's not really a shutdown.

ILL-inois: Felon and gangbanger given city grant to open Chicago liquor store

The Chicago Tribune is right. There are already plenty of liquor stores on Chicago's blighted West Side.

However, I'm sure very few of them are beneficiaries of a city grant.

From the Trib:
With backing from the local alderwoman and money from City Hall, a new liquor store opened earlier this year in South Austin -- one more purveyor of alcohol, cigarettes and lottery tickets in a neighborhood desperate for something more.

Informing the original backer of the store that he would be getting $105,000 in city funds, a letter from the Department of Community Development exclaimed: "Thank you for reinvesting in the City of Chicago!"

Many residents weren't so enthusiastic. To them, the new business was an insult.

But what even they didn't know was that the store was bankrolled and launched by a convicted drug-dealer who has been tied to a street gang and is facing yet another narcotics charge.
There as a ban on new booze outlets on the block where that new liquor store, Convenience for You, opened. Ald. Deborah Graham (29th) lifted the moratorium blocking new liquor stores there.

(Photo) Belleau Lake--another lake created by the building of the Tri-State Tollway

Earlier this week I posted an entry about one of the lakes created in the 1950s when fill was needed to build Interstate 294, the Tri-State Tollway.

Another of these bodies of water near Chicago's O'Hare Airport is Belleau Lake on Algonquin Road in Des Plaines.
