(Photos) Little Red Schoolhouse and Longjohn Slough

Little Red Schoolhouse
The next body of water in my continuing series of lakes, ponds, and sloughs in the Palos area where I grew up is Longjohn Slough.

People from all parts of the Chicago area travel to the Little Red Schoolhouse Nature Center on 104th Avenue south of Willow Springs.

Just steps from the center, which used to be based in, yes, a red schoolhouse that is pictured on the right, is Longjohn Slough.

Below is how the slough looked last month on a bright sunny Sunday.

As for the name, I have no idea how it came to be known as Longjohn. And as long as I can remember there have always been lilypads on it during warm weather months.
