An overlooked corner of the Chicago area is Saganashkee Slough (rhymes with shoe) near Willow Springs.
Many small lakes and pond in the city's southwest suburbs are quite shallow, hence they are designated "sloughs."
Saganashkee has four miles of shore line--but it's only nine feet deep.
I grew up about ten miles from the slough, trips here would have me thinking that I had traveled to Wisconsin. I fished here a few times, but I only managed to catch a few bullhead. A short walk east from Saganashkee is the Cal-Sag--short for Calumet-Saganashkee--Channel.
