Schakowsky: Your party should have passed a budget last year

Jan Schakowsky,
(D-IL)
My congresscritter, Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), issued an email blast about the looming government shutdown. She informs us what services will be effected, which won't, and what websites to visit to find more information.

And she adds this bit:

Yesterday, my Democratic colleagues and I offered three opportunities to keep the government open. Republicans voted no each time. And Speaker Boehner and the Republican leadership refused to allow us to pass a very short term bill to keep government services operating. They are insisting not just on deep budget cuts, but on policy changes that would severely restrict women's access to health services.
Fine. But Schakowsky omits one key item: Her party, which controlled both chambers of Congress last year, reneged on their duty to pass a budget. It's the first time that Congress dropped the fiscal ball since 1974.

As for "restrict women's access to health services," Schakowsky is referring to federal funding of Planned Parenthood, which gives pap smears to women, in addition to providing abortions. There are plenty of hospitals and clinics out there that provide pap smears as well as other crucial women's health services. Turn down the demagoguery, Jan.

UPDATE 9:20pm CDT

The Morton Grove Patch is reporting that Schakowsky has begun a fast to protest GOP spending cuts included in their proposed 2012 budget. Hey, at least the Republicans are writing a budget.
