Kyle Johnson and Trevon Tompkin are former Cahokia, Illinois village trustees who pleaded guilty to vote fraud. In a plea deal reached with prosecutors, Johnson will serve 14 days in St. Clair County Jail, Tompkin just 10. Both men will be have to perform 200 hours of community service and will be on probation for five years. During the time they are under probation, they cannot run for public office. Johnson pleaded guilt to 18 counts of fraud involving absentee ballots.
The prosecutor is outgoing St. Clair County State's Attorney Bob Haida, a Democrat, who told KDSK-TV two months ago, "Voter fraud, it's not sexy. It doesn't get a lot of headlines."
Well it should.
Vote fraud is no stranger to Illinois' Metro East region. But there aren't a lot of headlines about that.
Thanks to Cal Skinner of the McHenry County Blog for tipping me off to this story.
