Fall Sundays usually means Chicago Bears football, and for many people in my generation that is synonymous with the great Walter Payton. "Sweetness" left us in 1999 at age 45, a victim of bile duct cancer. But the Payton name lives on in many ways in Chicago, including the Walter and Connie Payton Foundation.
The runner on the left is raising money for it, which assists abused children.
Of course one autumn Sunday in October means the Chicago Marathon, and I ran my 21st consecutive Bank of America Chicago Marathon on 10/10/10.
Running marathons is educational. Although I haven't run a race outside the Chicago area since the Cleveland Marathon in 2005--you get a unique view of city while running its streets--I can learn about an organization such as Equine Dreams, which offers therapeutic horseback riding to people living with disabilities. The athlete on the upper right runs for the horses--and for those they help.
And the Children's Tumor Foundation is the beneficiary of the efforts from the woman on the lower right.
